This is not a bit overkill bracing for a small-body coco back?

Hey, you are probably right.
The guitar will frequently be transported by plane, so I wanted to go a bit overboard and not take a chance... idunno

I have been working on a Bubinga OM, 15" lower bout. The top is one that I have posted pics of before, trying to use a more compact bracing method where I can hopefully get more sound out of the plate. I'm binding it right now with Goncale Alves strips, and after that I already have a mahogany neck with a walnut fretboard bound in B/W/B and Goncalo Alves.

fixing with these 3 guitars. Spraying sunburst on one and polishing the others.

thinned out some Brazilian I got from Ebay a few years ago. It was like a potato chip, but I'll make it work after using a heating blanket to bend it flat. The sides thinned and bent surprisingly easily for me. There will be just enough room on this stump wood for a 000 size. Pretty excited about using this and hope I won't mess it up. My last one sounds very good. I need a piece of plywood to make a solera board.

Sorry to hear that Haans, 2 weeks is a long time to feel yuck(I had a cold for nearly 3 weeks last year) - I hope you get better soon

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

In the middle of some house renovation. Removing a fireplace, window and double door. Moving a wall, installing a few arches, and a wood stove. I like it when these projects are done but they sure are time sinks.

I bought 5 sets of these P-Rails. Once I got them all together I realized how badly they are contructed from a dimensional tolerance standpoint.....meaning they won't mount straight without big, uneven gaps between the pickup and the mounting ring. I made these aluminum rings that fit the plastic faceplate perfectly. The pickup is glued into the ring. The whole ring raises and lowers in the pickup cavity to set the height.

These rings are smaller than previous wooden rings I made....and I think they'll go nice with silver hardware.

After a pretty long hiatus from building I'm working on this octave mandolin. I'm really glad to be back in the shop! bliss
